Things to set up before you even start blogging with WordPress. Since many of you already have WordPress blogs, this means that you may need to make some changes right now. Skipping any of these steps will result in less search engine traffic, stickiness, or performance.
Things to set up after you start getting some content. Although I still consider these steps to be absolutely essential, due to their natures you will need to start using them after getting started.
Things To Set Up Before Posting Anything






1. Related Posts Plugin - Having related posts at the bottom of each of your posts gives you several significant advantages over people that don’t. First, it gives the reader additional information that they can use. Second, it mixes things up for Google and other search engines. The posts that are most closely related to other posts will change over time, refreshing the content on old pages. Third, it increases the amount of linking within your site which will give you better search engine rankings. More on that here: Related Posts Plugin and SEO.

2. Tag Cloud - Using a tag cloud on your site gives readers easy channels that they can use to find the information they’re looking for. In order to make this work properly, you will of course need to tag your posts properly. Tag cloud functionality is built in to WordPress 2.3+, and if you have an older version of WordPress you can always go with the Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin.

3. Show Top Commentators - This plugin allows users to earn links for participating actively through comments. You will be giving away a number of links, but this will really help to get the discussion going. This is extremely important for new blogs because people will judge your site based on how many comments you get, whether that’s fair or not. Some of you won’t want to give these links away. 4. Feedburner Feed Count - Install Feedburner RSS from the beginning and you’ll always know how many subscribers you have. There are ways to recover subscribers that subscribed before you install Feedburner, but it’s a pretty huge hassle and sometimes causes problems with your feed. Make sure to offer your feed through RSS and RSS by email.

5. All-In-One SEO Pack - This takes care of you on a lot of different levels. With this plugin, you will get more optimized HTML titles, which will help you to rank better. You also get generated meta descriptions which will also help you.

6. Threaded Comments - This step is 100% about the user experience. Using threaded comments has allowed me to answer reader questions directly. There is no debate as to whether this has increased the success of this blog. I’ve received at least 100 emails from people telling me that I was the only one who would answer their question.

Yes, you can answer questions without threaded comments but that is extremely inefficient. Many readers won’t scroll down to find an answer, especially considering that most bloggers don’t answer everyone’s questions. If the answer is right there, everyone will see it. 7. Recent Posts - When people get to your site, they will want to get an idea about the type of things you usually write about. You want to make this as easy as possible for them, and you can do that by creating a recent posts section in your sidebar. Skip this step, and you’ll lose some people that might have stuck around.

8. Google XML Sitemap - This step is crucial, especially in the beginning when you don’t have as much authority. You can either build this by hand (if you’re out of your mind) or you can use the Google sitemaps plugin. You can find more about this concept here: Getting Your XML Sitemap Into Google.

9. HTML Sitemap - Creating an HTML sitemap will help search engine spiders to find all of your pages, and will increase the linking within your site. I went over this concept in great detail here: Creating A Quick HTML Sitemap To Increase Crawlability.

Things To Set Up After You Get Some Content
10. Best Work Section - People will really be able to tell what you’re all about by reading your ‘best of’ section. I’ve received quite a few emails asking me what plugin I used to create that section. I didn’t actually use a plugin, I just placed links in my sidebar that go to each of those posts. I picked the posts that I thought people would like the most. Some people use comments to judge their work, but in my case some of my better posts were written before I had the audience I have now.

A ‘best of’ section also passes more link weight to the posts you include, which means that they will rank better than they would if you didn’t include them.

11. Channels or Channel Boxes - My three boxes at the top of my pages have been a smash hit, even though they need to be updated pretty badly. When people come to your site, they may want to find something that you haven’t talked about for a while. Organizing your site more like a traditional site and less like a blog can really help a lot of people out.

Blogging Zoom Day One Recap

As you can imagine yesterday was a pretty busy day for me and Vic. The first day was a huge success and in case anyone hasn’t noticed, there are a load of people who are already using the service. That’s only going to grow, in fact it grew quite a bit during the night while we were both asleep. Here are some of the highlights of BZ’s first day:

We had 1,485 unique visitors and 8,472 page views. Interesting factoid: Today we’ve already had about 500 unique visitors and 3,200 page views (it’s currently 10:12 a.m.) so it’s looking like we’ll at least double yesterday’s traffic. A lot of this traffic is already search engine traffic, which we knew it would be. These numbers aren’t even 1/100th of what we will be able to do within the next few weeks.
We increased indexed pages from 48 to 717. This is unheard of and to tell you the truth I don’t know if I believed that it was possible before I met Vic. This is huge for Blogging Zoom and goes to show that our plan to bring a huge chunk of search traffic is right on schedule.
Asktheadmin.com won the day with 10 zooms. The article ‘Attention Webmasters - Do you socialize? Want to make it easier?‘ Two posts from today already have over 10 zooms so we’re definitely going to have a new all-time record holder.

Google Adsense introduces... Tell A Friend!

Here's an unusually fun update from Google that's oh, so reminiscent of the Google-sponsored Orkut friends networking tool: Tell A Friend! Yes, that's right, if you're finding that Adsense is a good thing - and you certainly should be if you're building your sites properly - then you can now use Google to send your friends some information about the program
Here's what the Google message says:

"Just thought you might like to check out a program that lets you earn money from your website. It's called Google AdSense, and it's an easy way to get targeted ads that are relevant to your web pages.

"Google pays you when people click on the ads. It's free, and doesn't take long to set up. Check it out at: http://www.google.com/adsenseinvite_us P.S. Also check out the Quick Tour on the page above -- it explains what it's all about."

What hasn't been specified is whether there's any sort of bonus that you might get for recommending people for Adsense. If you have any information about this, please do share!

What do I need to know about the new MSN Search Engine?

Now that MSN has removed the wraps on its new search engine (beta.search.msn.com), intended to compete with both Google and Yahoo, the obvious question on the minds of SEO people everywhere is: what algorithm is MSN going to use for their pagerank calculations?
Microsoft is being predictably coy: their FAQ states: "The MSN Search ranking algorithm analyzes factors such as page contents, the number and quality of sites that link to your pages, and the relevance of your site?s content to keywords. The algorithm is complex and never human-mediated."

Nonetheless, there are some useful tips that give you a little bit of insight into how MSN is approaching search. This is all quoted from their site, and broken into three categories.

Technical Recommendations
Use only well-formed HTML code in your pages. Ensure that all tags are closed, and that all links function properly. If your site contains broken links, MSNBot may not be able to index your site effectively, and people may not be able to reach all of your pages.
If you move a page, set up the page's original URL to direct people to the new page, and tell them whether the move is permanent or temporary.
Make sure MSNBot is allowed to crawl your site, and is not on your list of web crawlers that are prohibited from indexing your site.
Use a robots.txt file or meta tags to control how MSNBot and other web crawlers index your site. The robots.txt file tells web crawlers which files and folders it is not allowed to crawl.
Keep your URLs simple and static. Complicated or frequently changed URLs are difficult to use as link destinations. For example, the URL www.example.com/mypage is easier for MSNBot to crawl and for people to type than a long URL with multiple extensions. Also, a URL that doesn't change is easier for people to remember, which makes it a more likely link destination from other sites.

Dave's comment: In case MSN didn't notice, the majority of traffic to a site are from search results, so the complexity of a URL doesn't matter as much as they are saying here. It's an interesting insight into their ranking criteria, imo.
Content Guidelines
In the visible page text, include words users might choose as search query terms to find the information on your site.
Limit all pages to a reasonable size. We recommend one topic per page. An HTML page with no pictures should be under 150 KB.
Make sure that each page is accessible by at least one static text link.
Create a site map that is fairly flat (i.e., each page is only one to three clicks away from the home page). Links embedded in menus, list boxes, and similar elements are not accessible to web crawlers unless they appear in your site map.
Keep the text that you want indexed outside of images. For example, if you want your company name or address to be indexed, make sure it is displayed on your page outside of a company logo.

Thinking of starting an adwords campaign? On the surface, the Google Adwords system looks deceptively simple. All there is to using Adwords is creating ads, setting the cost for your keywords and letting them run. The problem is, it is not as simple as that.The most important and difficult part of your Adwords campaign could be the ad itself. The bottom line is that if your ad is not compelling, nobody is going to click on it. Considering the fact that you only have 3 lines to work with, you have to be very clever and come up with lines that are going to work.How do you write that ad? There exist many theories on construction of ads, and they all work fine, but only for some segments of people. The key here is that you are not going to appeal to every segment. You have to choose your target market and make ads for that market.Learning a few ad-writing techniques for Adwords will be of help to you. After all there is only so much you can write in 3 lines of 35 characters each.Take your ad writing one line at a time.Headline – This has to capture the attention of whoever sees your ad. If you are selling a book on natural acne cure, you may use a headline that says “Cure Acne Naturally.” Since you have only 35 characters, make it short, powerful and to the point. Make sure your main targeted keyword is also there in the headline. Mind you, this is important. Google highlights searched keywords in bold in your ad. When people scan the search results, they always look for keywords they entered. Most searched keywords that are highlighted in bold help catch attention. This is the reason ads with searched keywords perform better than the ones without.First line – The first line of your ad is as important as the headline and should be as powerful. There is certainly no room for fluff. The first line of your ad should show the main benefit of your product. As discussed above, if you are selling an acne cure that is natural and will cure acne in 3 days, the key benefit of your product is the 3-day part. Your first line could read ‘Cure Your Acne In 3 Days, Stay Younger Looking, Lose Weight, Get Healthier, Live Happier, etc.” This is sure to grab people’s attention.Second line – The second line of your ad needs to reinforce the first line. In the first line, you gave the most important benefit of your product, that acne would be cured in 3 days. The second line will contain the most important feature, which is “Natural Cure”. So, the second line would be something like “All Natural Cure Guaranteed.”Let me tell you, this kind of ad will certainly get people to your website. It then depends on your sales copy to do the job of making them buy your product. I agree, those 3 lines of ad are not going to get people to buy your product, but will surely get them excited enough to get to your website.
